How far has your beef traveled today?

One of the projects I have been working on is the localization of our food supply. A friend of mine sent me this information.

Kinda made me think -is there a local supply for folks who eat meat to get their beef, pork or chicken from? Being a vegetarian myself… Continue

The Grow Dome Part 2

Here is another, more recent photo of The Dome -

The glazing is all up - the next step is to put up the water tank ~ the tank helps hold the heat in the dome and contributes to the overall humidity in the structure. I've been down with strep throat so not a lot of work the past couple… Continue

The Grow Dome

My friend John and I are working on a green house. I started the project about a year ago - at first with a lot of energy to 'get it done' but quickly realized it would take more than a few weekends. The Dome - as we refer to it as - is a 33' diameter geodesic growdome that was given to my husband Matt and I by friends. They had just purchased a tract of land outside Santa Fe and this amazing structure was on it - full of plants and beauty and just incredible. When I opened the door to the dome… Continue

Life lesson from Brett Farve

A little known aspect of my personality is that I like sports - Specifically Basketball and American Football. Today marks the official end of the 17 year career of the 3 time MVP Brett Farve. I'll admit it. I am a cheese head. I am proudly a Packer fan. I don't know if because my family lives in Wisconsin I have a genetic predisposition for the Pack or the fact that they are a municipally held team appeals to my community sensibilities or if it is something greater all together. Bottom line, th… Continue

Thanks for asking. We have given up on opening this year. There are lots of government regs to get past. We hope to have everything ready by next Spring!

I have operated a restauant in Jemez Springs for the past 7 years. My husband was the chef. He died 5 years ago and I kept it going until this past winter. I also teach full time and decided it was just too much and I didn't enjoy it anymore. I have always been interested in environmental issues and living a simplier lifestyle, so I decided to use the property to open a hostel and environmental education center. It is in the planning stage right now. I'm looking for people who have knowledge about sustainable issues that the community here would benefit from. I hope to hold classes on topics like vermicomposting, beekeeping, etc. We are a small rather isolated community. Many of our residents work in Los Alamos. We get hundreds of tourists who come up for the hot springs during the tourist season. I think there is a market for a hostel. The education center will be a growing experience. We'll see what happens!

Hey TC,
I've been thinking a lot about your gray water project. Wish I was closer. (I'm a pretty good guerrilla plumber). I'm planning a system for both my house and my milking barn that combines both a worm bin and a gray water system (in this system your disposal could be a real asset.) Some of the ideas came from the Solviva book (with my own modifications). Get me some more details on what you really want to do, and your plumbing layout, and I'll chime in with my own brand of weird ideas.
