Profile

Hometown:
Eugene
About Me:
I'm an eclectic, gregarious, outgoing person. I enjoy spending time with my friends and family; husband, Doug and two kids Maggie age 13 and Locke age 17.

I'm a great networker, I love bringing people together, meeting them, talking with them and making connections. I'm an instigator and a community and political activist. I am self-employed and have a home based business, Ely Organics

For the past 15 years I have been a stay-at-home mom, homeschooler and "professional" volunteer. I have raised over $150,000 for various organizations through direct donations, product sales, grant writing, and event coordination.

In August of 2006, I was the "Happening Person" in the Eugene Weekly.
Eugene Weekly
I'm really attracted to all things ethnic, like old beads, folk art, textiles, jewelry, clothing and world music.

I have been playing African marimba music for 8 years and I am in a marimba band, Zambuko, which originates from the Kutsinhira Cultural Arts Center, a local non-profit here in my town that I am a member of. In 2002, I produced a CD, Musimboti, of marimba and mbira music from bands and musicians that are part of Kutsinhira.

Previous to being home with my family, I worked on one of the largest National Forests in the Pacific Northwest. I am also a forester by trade and have a degree in Forest Management. During my 12 plus years with the US Forest Service I worked on many special projects. I used to fight forest fires all over the Western U.S. and was on a Hot Shot, firefighting crew.

My personal motto is: leave no stone unturned. I will go the extra mile to help people, complete a project and make things happen.

Please vote for Year-round home for Lane County Farmers Market on ideablob.com (time sensitive)

Hi everyone, I know many of you helped with this this a few months ago so I am back asking for your support again. I have entered a contest to win $10,000 to start a year-round Farmers market here in Eugene, Or. I entered the contest before and came up about 20 votes short of winning.... so, I'm back and my idea is featured on the home page for the contest. I really need your help: Title: A Year-Round Home for the Lane County Farmers' Market Idea Description: Design and draf… Continue

Organic Consumers Assocaition Consumer Alert: Cancer Causing Ingredient found in leading "organic" & "natural" personal care products

This is a subject near and dear to my heart. I have been following this issue for many years and am passionate about exposing the deception that goes on in the area of personal care and body care products on the market that call themselves "organic" and "natural" when they are not. I sell Miessence Certified Organics I follow this topic quite closely because of this. I just want you to know that I do sell products. This information is from the… Continue

He worked in the Klamath National Forest. He's worked fires, as well as survey work. On the fires, they were sent to different areas, so it's possible he made it up there at one time or another. He actually worked in the Klamath National Forest some 36 years ago, then left the Forest Service to become a teacher for a number of years in Wisconsin, and then decided to go back to forestry (that must have been ~20 years ago).

Ack, of course, the ideal situation would be if the owner would sign the building over to the Farmers Market effort. I hope the situation still works out though. A year-round Farmers Market would be such a great accomplishment!

As part of my life in Eugene, I worked at a nonprofit, where I was involved in fundraising, grant writing, etc. We came across a number of foundations/organizations that granted to projects similar to this one--where it's so obviously of benefit to the entire community (but you already have a ton of experience with grantwriting, so I'm sure you've explored many of those options)...

But serendipity does happen... Perhaps the building (or some other situation) will fall into place.

On a side note, my dad works for the US Forest Service (although he's mostly retired now); and my brother also works for the USFS during the summer--as he pursues a degree.

If all goes according to plan, I WILL be at the Bioneers Conference, and I'm looking forward to meeting everyone :)

Also, if you're ever in town, I'd love to get together (or if I make it to Eugene... the same applies).

In the meantime, I'll enjoy hearing what's happening in Eugene :) A year-round Farmer's Market is such a great idea, and perfect for Eugene! How did the voting go? If it didn't go well, this last time, I'd love to talk about ways we can promote this idea to the whole community.

Ester, that's cool. You are right there is a migration of people from Albuq to Eugene and back and forth from NM to OR. Will you be going to Bioneers in San Rafael? It would be fun to meet, also I come to ABQ to visit my family once in a while. Let's stay in touch.

Well, I didn't grow up in Eugene (or in Albuquerque), but I lived in Eugene for a number of years--LOVED IT! And, I've now lived in Albuquerque for a number of years. I still find it fascinating to hear and watch the movements of people from New Mexico to Oregon and back again :)

Erin,

My name is Steven Ribeiro. I'm from Independence, not Eugene, so I hope that's still OK. I am currently constructing what will be the world's highest rated certified green building (LEED Platinum), right here in Independence! It is a mixed-use building with 15 condos, offices, affordable "SmallMart" MicroStores and much more. The building will run on 100% renewable energy, primarily vegetable oil and the sun. I'm looking for someone to help me get the word out that this is actually happening. My goal is to find folks that are willing to sell their home and buy into this building (a condo) and help us prove that we can live much better on just 25% of the energy that most Americans live on. Pioneers like the folks that moved into the Biodome in AZ. Take a look at www.independencestation.com and let me know what you think.

Thanks.

Steven
