Starting next month Utah will be the first state to switch to a 4-day work week for thousands of government employees, an effort aimed at reducing energy costs and commuters' gasoline expenses.

The employees will put in 10 hour days, Monday through Thursday and then have Fridays off, freeing them to spend time with their kids, attend appointments, shop or anything else they would like. They get paid the same as before.
The state is going to evaluate the program after one year but it will be interesting to see if this model catches on or if more organizations will try other ways of conserving in the work place such as telecommuting, flexible schedules and job sharing.
