Practical solutions for people + planet

I just rented a Prius and I liked it. It has good pickup and is the right size for me. I have heard something about the batteries not being able to be recycled, insurance hard or expensive to purchase, not high enough mileage! Should I buy one?

I think that it's a good car to buy if you're taking a SUV off the road. In my opinion, the fuel savings aren't good enough if you're just swapping for a compact fuel efficient sedan. Then, also, you have the argument about how much energy it costs to create a new vehicle...and we should just revive used ones. Also, there's info out there that the prius is one of the most toxic vehicles out there...there's always the idea of just changing your behavior to incorporate more walking, biking and public transportation.

I think there's obviously a lot of considerations- where do you live? what is your current lifestyle? what is your budget?

Gingeroo,

Thank you for your comment; I am nervous about the batteries being able to recycle. I live in Albuquerque New Mexico and we are the standard drive in your car to do anything! I am a contractor and need a viehicle that I can haul at leist some misc. construction material. As far as my budget, I will afford to buy the most sustainable viehicle that will meet 80% of my needs. How about a Honda Hybred?

I'm up the road in Santa Fe, and recognize the driving problem we have here in NM! Although I will say your city is a little ahead of mine when it comes to public transportation options.

Umm....thinking...a friend I was talking to recently who is also a builder/contractor asked me this same question. I recommended to him to get a diesel truck and run it on biodiesel. It's not difficult to make yourself, and more often you're able to find stations that will sell it. This site might be helpful in comparing the different "green" cars out there http://www.greenercars.org/highlights_greenest.htm
