Just saw a moving video The Salt Song Trail, given to us by Melissa Nelson of The Cultural Conservancy.
Traditional Salt Song singers from fourteen bands of Southern Paiutes and Chemehuevi from Arizona, Utah, Nevada and Southern California sing songs from a 142 song cycle. The Salt Songs are mourning songs that traditionally begin at sundown and are sung through the night and into the morning before sunrise. The last four songs are… Continue
I found this article on AlterNet today, by Sustain Lane. All of these items are obvious for most of us, but if you're looking for a consolidated list to educate your friends and family, this is a good one to share. Continue
an excerpt from the Associated Press - L'AQUILA, Italy – US President Barack Obama joined other world leaders on Wednesday in backing new targets for battling global warming, a move the Bush White House had resisted.
White House officials confirmed that Obama agreed to language supporting a goal of keeping the world's average temperature from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit).

Many leading scientists agree that mankind has little time left in which to make the necessary changes to reverse the environmental crisis. We are facing the 11th hour, yet high school students continue to graduate, ignorant of both the issues and the significant role they can play in healing our planet. The vast majority of schools still follow a sequencing of curriculum stemming from reforms dating from the early 20th century. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Algebra, Geometry, English Language Ar… Continue

When we as consumers purchase food and drink brandishing the well known and easily recognizable green and white "USDA Certified Organic" label, we assume and expect that what we are buying is not only free of harmful chemicals, but is also produced in a strictly regulated and environmentally friendly way. But with the explosion of organic goods readily available, is that really the case anymore? Not according to a recently published… Continue
(This is a great article, suggested read by Nina Simons.)
The era of male dominance is coming to an end.
Seriously.
For years, the world has been witnessing a quiet but monumental shift of power from men to women. Today, the Great Recession has turned what was an evolutionary shift into a revolutionary one. The consequence will be not only a mortal blow to the macho men’s club called finance capitalism that got the world into the current economic catastrophe; it will be a collective crisis fo… Continue
Every day, old Sol makes his pass across our sky. Thinking about an economy based in water, soil and sunlight is my bailiwick. But I must keep the people side in focus too. Having returned to my home county after a three-year adventure to other parts, mostly urban, gives me a novel set of parameters to work with. What I am learning is that the American mind is forgetful of the American core values, and value is the basis of economy. Both city people and county folks must know that the clouds, th… Continue

Godzilla, the monster dinosaur featured in dozens of films, was a creation of a Japan still recovering from two atomic bombs. The monster was more than just a man in a sweaty rubber suit: Godzilla represented what can go wrong when people play with forces powerful enough to level cities. Now that same country is working on breeding what is being labeled "super tuna."
Don't wor… Continue

Just watched a video, Among the Giant Sequoias. The narrator mentioned that only 4% of the native forests are left. I saw the same statistic watching The Story of Stuff.
It is hard to believe that logging is still happening. They recommend moving the Sequoias from the National Forest Service to the National Park Service. Take a look at their site for ways to get involved. Continue

Baby Carrots - The following is information from a farmer who grows and packages carrots< br> for IGA, METRO, LOBLAWS, etc
Some people in our office eat the small cocktail (baby) carrots you buy in small plastic bags are made using the larger crooked or deformed carrots which are put through a machine which cuts and shapes them into cocktail carrots - most people probably know this already.
What you may not know and should know is the following:
