Practical solutions for people + planet

What are your opinions about the Navajo-proposed coal power plant in northwestern New Mexico?

The EPA has recently asked for an appeal to reconsider the previously-issued air permit.

It appears that pros would be revenue and employment on the Navajo reservation, but major cons would be more CO2 emissions and the obvious impact on humans and the environment.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the interesting links, after briefly reading and researching this I think I oppose the Coal power development, but support the pending wind energy development on the Navajo land : http://www.azcentral.com/news/green/articles/2008/03/28/20080328nav...

This large scale wind energy development seems to be a great solution to the challenges that face the Navajo reservation: it will boost local economy, create local green job opportunities, and create affordable local renewable energy for the community.

Suzanne or anyone else in the southwest, do you have more information on this? Is this wind energy project still in the works, is it in same geographical area as planned coal-power development? Thanks...

Thanks, That is a very informative article; explains and overviews the complexities of the southwest situation re land use, energy, indigenous people...

Interesting to check out the details re the Hopi Foundation initiative NativeSUN LLC: "For $5,000 to $7,000, a home can be powered with a PV system in just two days. This enables the household to run lights, a television, sewing machine, kitchen appliances and even small power tools" ( http://apps1.eere.energy.gov/tribalenergy/pdfs/nativesun0601.pdf).

Also just discovered the Dreaming New Mexico website, http://www.dreamingnewmexico.org/ ... I can definitly draw parallels between challenges faced in the southwest and challenges / opportunities faced in Alaska and the Yukon re indigenous rural communities, land use, sustainability... and critical choices re major renewable vs. non renewable energy decisions. Interesting to learn about the services Native Sun LLC offers to enable homeowners to affordably live off the grid on renewable power system.
